Gardening Trends in 2017 for Urban or Country Living

Mesquite trees have started to bloom, and according to farmer folklore that means spring has officially begun. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the warming weather and make plans for this year’s garden. Whether you live in a rural area or in the middle of town, there are plenty of ways to put that green thumb to work.

Community Gardens
Community gardens are experiencing a rise in popularity and gaining momentum in the Austin area. Take a look at all of the community gardens in Austin or read about how you can help start a garden on city land in your neighborhood.

Above Ground Gardening
If traditional gardening isn’t your idea of a good time, but you still love the idea of growing your own vegetables and herbs, urban gardening ideas like a Garden Tower or Growroom may be just for you.

Xeriscape and Native Plants
Landscape design can dramatically increase the curb appeal of your home. Recent trends show a return to indigenous plants and xeriscaping that requires less maintenance. Learn which plants are native to the area and help preserve water resources with this guide to Native and Adapted Landscape Plants for Central Texas.

From March 10 to March 19, Austin will be inundated to host the internationally acclaimed SXSW Festival. The interactive, film, and music facets of the festival bring upwards of $317 Million to the Austin Economy, and along with it, tens-of-thousands of people to our quaint little town.
With all of the chaos centered downtown, the effects of the festival can be felt throughout the city, from restaurants, to customer service times, and yes, you guessed it – traffic.
  • Know where to park with this handy app.
  • Know what routes to take and which streets are closed.
  • Fasten is the official rideshare service for SXSW.
Go for free
You don’t have to pay premium prices for a wristband to see great bands. There are a variety of unofficial events scheduled and free shows to attend. The Austin Chronicle is a great source for staying up-to-date on the best venues and bands playing in the Austin area.
Get away from it all
  • Take a trip to Padre Island for a rejuvenating beach vacation.
  • Go camping at Krause Springs and explore the natural springs.
  • Head down to San Antonio and take a stroll along the Riverwalk.
